‘Auntie Boss’ Actor Maqbul Mohammed Talks Acting Journey

$

0

Maqbul Mohammed is a household name on Kenyan television having first appeared on TV as a teenager in the KBC TV drama Reflections. In 2011, he was cast as one of the main characters in award-winning soap opera Lies that Bind.

Maqbul, who doubles as a radio presenter, is now plying his trade in the rib-cracking NTV sitcom Auntie Boss since 2015.

Here’s his story.

You are a radio host at Capital FM. How did you get into acting?

Acting came naturally for me. In 1995, one of my teachers picked me to act something out because I was the class clown and noisemaker.

All of a sudden, becoming someone else really got me excited. After completing high school, I saw an ad in the paper about a play at Phoenix Theatres (my sister was an actress there in 1991) and my mum urged me to try out.

From the moment I stepped on that stage, that was it. I never turned back; I even took a sabbatical from campus to get into acting.

So your mother had a hand in your becoming an actor?

My mother and my eldest sister Thelma have been an inspiration because they have pushed me towards my dreams and my passion.

That is what we need in our society. And I was also lucky enough to marry someone who is in the industry; she understands what I do and supported me even when I was stubborn enough to say: I don’t want to do this anymore.

Tell us more about your role as Donovan on Auntie Boss. Why do you enjoy playing him?

Donovan has a lot of problems, from Varshita to the house helps to dealing with one of his closest friends Mayweather.

There is a lot of drama around him, and he is just trying to stay sane around this woman he can’t seem to get rid of. For instance, if I kick her out today, I’ll find her in the bedroom tomorrow.

What attracted you to this character in the first place?

I hadn’t played a comedy role in a long time so I was so excited to get back to it. Comedy requires physical and emotional energy because it takes a lot from you.

It was an amazing challenge for me, different from the laidback drama that I usually do. Also, I knew acting alongside Eve was going to be fun, the same for the other cast members as well.

I had worked with some of them on stage at the Kenya National Theatre and it was fantastic to bounce off each other because we had chemistry already.

But most of all, I had not acted in a long time. I had taken a sabbatical because at a certain point I had trouble believing in the industry.

When I read the script for Auntie Boss and saw their vision and where they wanted to go with the show, I quickly jumped on board.

Acting alongside Varshita can be pretty intense, because she’s nuts. How do you prepare for the role of Donovan?

First of all, the first thing to do as an actor when you want to get into a role is to get into costume. When you wear someone else’s shoes or outfit, it changes your persona.

And then I usually take about five minutes before going into the scene and chant a mantra internally.

Just come early enough to cut yourself off, get into character and try as much as you can to concentrate on your role, which is kind of hard because there’s a lot of chit chats and catching up before shooting begins.

What important life lessons have your learnt from the character throughout the seven seasons?

Get to know someone first before getting engaged or anything. I’ve learnt perseverance because situations change every single day.

The person that you think is crazy or the one you think is out to get you, most of the time when you look deeper, you’ll find that most of them are going through something.

For instance, Varshita has a background of problems with her parents and she seeks to find comfort in Donovan whether he likes it or not.

People go through different things every day but you need to take your time to understand them and not just judge them.

Do you think you are similar to Donovan in any way?

Donovan loves his “me time” and for Maqbul as well, peace of mind is paramount because between balancing two jobs – radio and acting – and a family, sometimes you just want some moments for yourself.

There’s that sense of serenity for both of them. I love that Donovan is very inspired to open his own business and focus on it, which is more or less what I do.

I like to focus on one thing and push it to the end because whatever I do sets up the foundation for the other people who are coming after us.

That’s what we’ve been doing in this industry for the past 20 years.

Looking back, which one of your roles are you most proud of?

I’d say two roles that I played on stage. One is Backlash by Cajetan Boy, a story about stigmatisation of AIDS victims. It was so amazing; it drew a lot of emotion out of me.

Not only was I acting, I was educating as well. The other one is Enemy of the People, which I performed at a time when the country was up and down politically.

I was lucky enough that the play was showing at Phoenix Theatre at a time when big names such as Ayang’ Nyong’o formed part of the audience.

I remember while on stage I would look at them and point out exactly what I was saying so that they could hear because it was a reflection of the society.

That was one of my best moments. TV has its own moments but stage captures me more.

What are you currently watching on TV?

I’m watching Billions on repeat because the story is just so deep; it plays with your mind. The thing about Billions is that one day, you’ll be on Paul Giamatti’s (Chuck Rhoades) side because he represents justice but you see how justice can be skewed.

The next day, you find yourself on Damian Lewis’s (Bobby Axelrod) side because he is just so charismatic; you sink into everything he says.

Eric Omondi: “Why and How I Used Billboard to Welcome Chantal Home”

Comedian Eric Omondi is still very much on people’s tongues days after pulling off another romantic masterstroke to welcome his fiancee Chantal.

Read: Eric Omondi Showcases Romantic Side As He Welcomes Chantal With Huge Billboard

The comedian has now come out to disclose how he pulled off the billboard. Eric Omondi teamed up with Chinese digital service provider StarTimes to erect the billboard at the exit point of the JKIA.

“These things are not really extraordinary. If you are able to do these things, do them,” he said.

“I planned the surprise for two months. I hunted for a billboard which was at an exit point from the JKIA. I needed one which was at a high traffic area. The Chinese Digital service provider had placed their advert on a billboard, which I had deemed to be on a very strategic spot. I reached out to them and they liked the idea, which saw us partnering,” Eric added.

According to Omondi, he chose to use a billboard because it’s something that hadn’t been done in the country.

“I opted for the billboard placement because it is a move which, until then, had not been pulled by any couple in Kenya. I’d initially thought of placing the message on a screen at the airport, unfortunately, there are no screens at the JKIA, which left me with no choice but to go the billboard way. I wanted to welcome Chantal to Kenya after five months of being away in Italy,” said Eric Omondi.

The stunt has seen Kenyan men on the internet claim that the comedian has set romantic standards too high. But Eric has urged them not to feel pressurized into going out of their financial span to please their partners.

“I have seen men on social media claiming I set the standards so high for them, and that their partners would, probably, want a similar treat. What I can say is that that was Eric Omondi doing his thing. He can afford it. Men should not feel pressurized into hiring billboards to relay their love messages to their partners. People are different; and that is why there is Eric Omondi, Jonathan Otieno, Alfred Mwangi, we have wazungus, Africans… People are different. So, I am not asking people to do what I did,” said Eric Omondi.

“I am happy she (Chantal) is home,” concluded the comedian.

He, however, declined to disclose how much the stunt cost him.

People of the internet have ganged up against Akothee over her latest risque dance dress for being too “indecent.”

The controversial musician had her social media followers up in arms yesterday after posting pictures of herself wearing a laced thigh-high jumpsuit that leaves little to the imagination.

The mother of five posed alongside two people she identifies as her dance instructors, revealing that she was starting ballet classes.

“Starting my dance classes with the best ballet guru. 2018 looking brighter, yesterday was a blast,” wrote Akothee.

No sooner had she posted the picture than social media erupted, bashing the ‘Benefactor’ singer for alleged indecency.

There is a new cat-fight brewing in the showbiz scene pitting reality television actress Mishi Dora against Dj Pierra Makena.

This after the outspoken and controversial socialite took to social media to hurl unprintable insults at the entertainer and television personality. According to Mishi, Pierra has been fat-shaming her in an undisclosed WhatsApp group.

Not one to take the alleged gossip lying down, the Nairobi Diaries actress came out gun blazing on Insta yesterday telling off the TV presenter.

“B****leave my fucking life alone… Why you so bitter with me? I’m I the one that your bby daddy left you for and got married to?? Abeg if I’m sexy or not how is it your cup of tea?? Wewe nahiyo mwili yako sexy siuliachwa tu bado na mimba kama mimi?? Go fix your life before trying to fix others,” ranted Mishi.

Akothee Taken to Court By Baby Daddy in Painful Custody Battle Over Son

Musician and businesswoman Akothee has been taken to court to respond to a case filed by one of her baby daddies.

The singer’s baby daddy, only identified as Markus and the father of her eight-year-old son Oyoo, filed the case under matter of urgency. We understand he wants free access to their son at his convenience.

Akothee made the revelations about the case in a series of social media posts yesterday. She is expected to appear in Court today.

In her posts, Akothee disclosed that Markus, in his petition, argues that his son is living with cohabitants not known to him. This comes after Akothee recently outed her relationship with her manager, Nelson.

Markus also feels that Oyoo’s life is threatened because Akothee travels a lot.

An emotional and pained Akothee recalled how Markus mistreated her when she fell pregnant. She narrated how he threw her out of his house when she was nine months pregnant.

“Is this not the same man(Markus) who threw me out 9 months pregnant and denied the child? Is this not the same father who took his son at 3 years to Switzerland and brought him back after 3 months saying he has no time and he wants to enjoy his life? Is this not the same father who came back again after 4 years, took his son to a German school in Switzerland and came for holiday in Kenya leaving his son with papa Oyoo whom he calls a stranger now?” wondered Akothee.

“So where has Markus been since 8 years of his son’s growth that now he feels the life of his son threatened?” added the ‘Baby Daddy’ hitmaker.

In another post, Akothee revealed that she was in so much pain and vowed to protect her son.

“I have always been there for you since day 1! for this time around I will go to jail for you! I will climb mountains for you my son! It has been 8 years of struggle pain & humiliation from your dad! The tears I don’t allow you to see, just as I protected you from adverse weather and through God’s miracles I brought you into the harsh world so will I still and be there for you my king,” wrote Akothee.

She added: “am so much in pain I don’t know if I can stand in court and look at this same man who said he has no time for his own son at 58 years old and threw us out of his house 3 times.”

Akothee’s followers sympathized with the musician’s plight as she contemplated whether to appear in Court or not.

Well I always breakdown anytime my son ask for his father’s where bouts, I don’t know how to explain that his father has no time for him! Am happy he finally filled his case in court under matter of urgency ! But my question is , what does Markus really want ? Is it true he really want to see his son ? Or he wants us as a package? Is this not the same man who threw me out 9 months pregnant and denied the child? Is this not the same father who took his son at 3 years to Switzerland and brought him back after 3 months saying he has no time and he wants to enjoy his life ? Is this not the same father who cane back again after 4 years took his son to a German school in Switzerland and came for holiday in Kenya leaving his son with papa Oyoo whom he calls a stranger now , I had no option but to go assist my son as papa Oyoo only speaks French So he could not help much with homework ! is this not the same Markus who said lats week he has no time for his son during the school breaks but only in summer time ? Is this not the Markus who arrived in Kenya early December and told my friends not to tell me he is around ! And only calling my employees to ask which man is in my house ? What should I go to do in court! What should I go to do or answer in court tommorow ? Because he wants to see his son at his convenient time ? Because I should not date or move on with my life !He claims his son has been living with people unknown to him !is he being fair to humanity ? Today Markus calls Dominic a stranger who has been there for his son since the boy was 2 weeks ! So where has Markus been since 8 years of his sons growth that now he feels the life of his son threatened? Should I give him his son ? But then will it last before he brings him back! He once said if he is forced to pay upkeep he will run away with my son!Oyaa I am not asking him for any peny am happily taking care of my son , he says I travel a lot and he fears for the life of his son , well Dominic has always been there for me and the children any day and even now ! Nothing But Flames! Fena Gitu Drops ‘Fenamenal’ Love Jingle ‘Trouble’

Fena Gitu’s first single of 2018 is a sizzling love jam dubbed ‘Trouble.’

After weeks of teasing and whetting her fans’ taste buds on social media, the ‘Fenamenal’ entertainer finally delivered the feel-good single on Tuesday.

In ‘Trouble’, Fena, who ended last year on a high, delves into the uncertainties, fears, and jitters that come with a new romance. She finds herself between a rock and hard place called ‘Trouble’ because she wants her partner but she is convinced they are nothing but trouble.

While Fena’s lyricism and vocal delivery are undeniable in ‘Trouble’, the magic touch by producer and sound engineer iLogos makes ‘Trouble’ another worthy addition to the list of ‘Fena Ngoma zako ni kali.’ iLogos was also the brains behind Fena’s massively successful 2017 women empowerment anthem -Doing Her Thing Tho.

The song’s video, directed by Briizy DJ (Lucid Visuals), is also worth writing home about. Shot on location at the Garden City Mall along Thika Road, and the Sam Mburu Retreat Center in Karen, it captures stunning and breathtaking scenes. Television presenter Martin Kimathi and naturalista beauty Esther Wangoi contribute their acting skills to help tell this modern-day fantasy love tale between two strangers.

‘Trouble’ is pure flames. If this is just January music, we are in trouble, albeit the good kind. Watch below.

“I Cannot Correct God’s Work,” Eric Omondi Speaks Up on Wardrobe Malfunction

It is only in the 254 where Eric Omondi’s dangly bits can be a topic of discussion for days. The comedian’s family jewels have been trending after he ‘inadvertently’ posted a picture showcasing his bulging ‘cargo’ while on holiday in Malindi.

Just hours after Omondi posted the picture, Kenyans online got naughty and came up with the #EricOmondiChallenge. Through the challenge, netizens mocked the comedian with pictures showcasing their various ‘gonads.’

As Eric’s nuts continue to mesmerize many, a local daily has reached out to him to profer more details about his jewels.

The comedian explained that the wardrobe malfunction was not intentional.

“No, it was not intentional. I had innocently posted the picture and four minutes after it went online, I noticed that I was receiving a lot of comments on it. I logged in to check the Instagram users’ feedback. It is then that I realised that a part of my manhood was showing through my pair of shorts,” said Omondi.

Yeah right. Forgive me for being among those who doubt it was unintentional.

Knowing Eric, this could easily have been just another publicity stunt. The comedian has undeniably mastered the art of publicity and it is no wonder his services are highly sought-after by corporates. His holiday in Malindi was sponsored by Travel and Tour company Bonfire Adventures.

Another fact that beats logic is how one can post a picture without noticing his family jewels are on show. The cheeky smile on his face and Chantal’s laugh also suggest there was more to the picture than Eric is telling us.

How about the photographer? Didn’t he also notice Eric was ‘balling’?

All in all, Eric Omondi is content with the picture remaining on his page. He said he would not be pulling it down because his work is to make people laugh.

“For a moment, I was confused on what to do. I contemplated deleting the picture, but on second thought, I decided it remains on the platform. I cannot correct God’s work.”

“The most private part of my body are my bones, and the whole world knows about my skinniness. I choose to overlook what online users are saying on Instagram about the controversial picture. I am a comedian; my work is to make people laugh. So long as my actions make them laugh, I am happy,” said Eric.

At this very moment, I’m beginning to think that the stuff we Kenyans smoke is unfit for human consumption. How else would you explain this ‘Akorino’ version of last year’s global hit ‘Man’s Not Hot.’

The original ‘Man’s Not Hot’ was done by British funnyman Michael Dapaah, popularly known as Big Shaq. It instantly became a worldwide sensation and continues to garner views on Youtube. Currently, it has been viewed over 190,400,000 times.

As music composers and enthusiasts continue to release their covers of the song, a Kenyan Akorino faithful has come through with a creative rendition that no one saw coming.

The rendition has been done by one Tito Wagithomo Wa Roho and it is the funniest thing you’ll probably watch today. Gotta love Kenyans.

It appears celebrated actress Jacqueline Nyaminde, who is most notable for her Wilbroda role in ‘Papa Shirandula’, has bigger b*lls than Eric Omondi.

This is after she proved she is pure guts and steel when she posed with a huge African rock python around her neck. This she did during an excursion to the Crocodile and Snake Farm in Malindi a few days ago.

In addition to carrying the weight of the 25kg reptile on her shoulders, Nyaminde also ‘bonded’ with a live crocodile hatchling.

She shared the pictures on Instagram, sending shivers down the spines of her followers, with some noting that the radio personality has a particular liking for the reptiles. This is not the first time the actress has scared her followers with snakes.

Last year, she posted another cringe-worthy picture holding a bunch of snakes. Though hard to tell if they were real or toys, those of us with ophidiophobia could not stand the sight.

Media personality Massawe Japanni wrote: “Weirdo😲.”

njeshqabbz added: “Jesus!😔😔

The self-proclaimed ‘Raverend’ Shaffie Weru is definitely not feeling the January woes that seem to have hit the rest of us, peasants, really hard. This after the popular radio personality splashed millions to buy some new wheels.

The Kiss FM presenter is now cruising in a Range Rover Vogue, a decent upgrade on his previous Land Rover Discovery.

According to Shaffie, the swanky black SUV is his bae because he is very much single.

“I’m single and that’s the only thing getting my attention now,” Shaffie told Word Is. Asked what happened to the old whip he said, “That’s Nia’s (daughter’s) school bus.”

The ‘Turn Up King’ further dismissed the hard economic times associated with January as a myth because he works hard and balling is a lifestyle.

“Njaanworry is a myth to the Raverend. I work hard and play even harder. I don’t work to only party or buy sh*t in specific months… My life is a constant roller coaster,” he said.

Shaffie, who is also a renown speed bike enthusiast, also bragged about giving away his old machine and replacing it with another meaner machine.

“I gave my speed bike to my kid bro who turned 30! Plus I have new Quod/All-Terrain Bike. Before I turn 40, I would want to drive a Bentley Bentyga or G 63 AmG.”

For a guy who lost an estimated Sh3.5 Million worth of valuables after a break-in at his Lavington apartment a few months ago, Shaffie is doing well for himself.

She said she is out to reclaim her title as the ‘baddest’ femcee and Stella Mwangi is living up to her promises.

After a successful 2016/2017 in which the Norwegian-based rapper released commercial pop records for the Hollywood Sync market, the ‘Identify Yourself’ rapper is on a re-birth of sorts this year.

The ‘Biashara’ rapper has been working on building her independent record label in Norway: Badili Akili Music’. Barely a week after dropping ‘Not Your Ordinary’, the rapper has unveiled brand new visuals to her second single ‘Kuchizi’ under her label.

‘Kuchizi’, a slang for ‘gone crazy’, is a feel-good hip-hop track, which sees STL chest thump with killer and often explicit bars.

The production of ‘Kuchizi’ video consists only of women and was shot on location at String Showbar in Oslo.
