DJ Pinye Eats Humble Pie, Apologises to Kenyan Artistes Whose Careers he Derailed

Veteran Kenyan disc jockey, Peter Chuani alias DJ Pinye, has finally acknowledged that he played a part in derailing the careers of some local music acts.

Late last year, the mixmaster ruffled feathers in the music industry and beyond when he openly confessed that he never played songs by some Kenyan musicians songs on his ‘The Beat’ show because their content was mediocre.

He named now-established artistes such as the highflying Khaligraph Jones, while stating that he cannot play music by new age stars Ethic.

“There are artists whose music I did not play back in the days, including Khaligraph and DNA, but their careers have grown… I cannot play Lamba Lolo or New Position. DJs shouldn’t play mediocre music,” said DJ Pinye in an interview with NRG radio.

What followed was an uproar, with DNA, in particular, dropping a weak diss track dubbed ‘Kapinye’.

DJ Pinye has since reflected on his purported wrongdoings in the industry. He took to social media yesterday as he turned 48 years to apologize to artistes who feel their careers were derailed by his influence in the industry.

“On my bdays, I usually reflect on alot of things about my life. Today, am thinking about my impact. My impact on other people’s lives specifically those in the music industry. One thing is clear, I am aware of my influence. I apologise to those who feel I played a part in derailing their music career. But I am not apologetic for the values and standards I uphold for our music industry. #itsmybirthday #foreveryoung #playgoodmusic,” wrote DJ Pinye.

“Where was Tanasha all this Time?” Esma Platnumz Loves Diamond’s New Catch

To say that Tanasha Donna has impressed Diamond’s family would be an understatement; They are totally in love with the petite Kenyan radio presenter.

Tanasha Donna Oketch finally met her supposed in-laws for the first time on January 13th, 2019. While she might have been scared AF when Diamond and his family hosted her for lunch, it appears Tanasha has left a lasting impression.

In fact, word on the street has it that the entire family has been blocked by Zari Hassan on social media for posting about Tanasha Oketch.

One of the more impressed in-laws happens to be Diamond’s sister, Esma Platnumz, who has gushed about Tanasha. She says that she clicked with Tanasha from the very moment her brother introduced her to their family.

Esma further wonders where Tanasha has been all this time, a clear indicator that she thinks the Kenyan babe is better than her brother’s previous partners.

“Huwezi amini Tanasha tayari ameshakaa ndani ya moyo wangu, nampenda sana na kuna muda najiuliza alikuwa wapi muda wote? Kwa nini hakutokea mapema kwenye familia yetu? Hayo mambo ya kuniita yuda hata siyajali kabisa, watajua wenyewe kwani mimi maisha yanasonga,” said Esma Platnumz.

Last December, Esma was also the first to endorse Tanasha but on condition that she does not turn out like Diamond’s former flames, Zari Hassan and Hamisa Mobetto.

“Wala sina shida, nimemkubali wifi yangu na kwa sababu Nasibu (Diamond) mwenyewe ndiye amesema anamuoa na ameridhiana naye, mimi ni nani nikatae? Kikubwa ninawaombea heri tu asiwe kama wengine ili na mimi nipate wifi wa halali, niache uyuda,” said Esma Platnumz.

Nyce Wanjeri: Ex-hubby was Disrespectful and Never Met my Parents

$

Award-winning Kenyan TV, film, and stage actress Nyce Wanjeri has finally spilled the beans on her failed 9-year marriage to Titus Wainaina “Tito Wagithomo”.

Last November, Wagithomo stirred the pot when he took to Facebook to announce the end of their marriage. He alluded that the cause of all the trouble in their relationship started when Nyce’s acting career took off.

The announcement came just two months after Nyce Wanjeri won Best Actress-Comedy Movie/TV Series award at the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), which in turn ushered a flurry of endorsement deals and better acting offers.

While Tito may have deleted the post and indicated that they were working to fix their marriage, it appears that the damage is irreparable.

Nyce Wanjeri has finally told her side of the story, accusing Tito of, among other things, disrespecting her.

Speaking to Massawe Japanni on Radio Jambo, the mother of one said: “It is true we broke up, just like he[Tito] said. Every marriage has its teething problems. Every partner in a relationship has a side to him or her that causes friction in the union. I do not want to say [we broke up] as a result of me challenging his position as a man in the union. I won’t say much because you never know what happens in the lives of people who share a blanket together; so much goes on between them.”

The award-winning actress added that she started noticing serious elements of disrespect in Tito when they were seven years in the relationship.

“Money began flowing in; for him and I. It was at that point that I started noticing serious elements of disrespect in him. Of course, there were pockets of disrespect before, but after crossing the 7-year line, the degree of disrespect in him ballooned. I felt it was getting worse by the day, and I could feel it was weighing me down,” she said.

“There are a lot of issues I’m not ready to talk about but the first one was disrespect among other things. A lot of people handled it depending on how he (Waitomo) posted it and blamed it on my success but that is not true, money comes and goes, material things are nothing. The most important thing in a relationship is love and respect,” the former ‘Auntie Boss’ actress told Massawe.

Nyce also revealed that they could not seek the help of their parents because Tito had never met her parents.

“We couldn’t seek our parents’ intervention because he has never visited my parents, neither has he even met them. We had planned, in the course of the relationship, that he would visit my parents and formally ask them to bless our union. I asked him, several times, why he wasn’t even mentioning to me about plans of visiting my parents… On my end, however, he introduced me to his parents.”

“I say when someone disrespects you today, tomorrow and the day thereafter, and he is not showing any signs of changing for the better, you would, of course, get tired of his or her disrespectful habits. And, you realise his disrespectful habits, when you mature mentally,” added Wanjeri.

The two were blessed with one child, a daughter.

Daddy Owen is relishing the role of daddy to his two children, especially his firstborn son who is already a school-goer.

The gospel music crooner has shared what fatherhood means to him and the tips he uses to bond with his son.

“Fatherhood is okay. Every day I learn something new from the kids. You know being a parent helps one understand better the struggles our parents went through when we were young,” Daddy Owen told the Star.

“Being a father also makes one understand things they could not understand before. I always drop my son to school every morning, despite the fact the school offers an option where one can pay for transport when paying school fees,” he said.

On the rapid expansion of technology in children’s lives, Daddy Owen said:

“Technology has taken over. Instead of them spending all their time in the house playing video games, we take long drives. That’s one way for us to bond and know what’s going on in his life. It’s very important to me. On weekends we also take long drives alone.”

The NHIF brand ambassador and his wife Farida Wambui welcomed their second born in July last year.

In a past interview, Daddy Owen narrated how he almost lost his son after an anomaly with the umbilical cord.

He now uses the experience to spread awareness and encourage men to support their women during childbirth and afterward.

The 28-year-old beauty was over the moon, taking to Instagram on Thursday to announce the big milestone. According to Anita Nderu, getting her own place had been a long time coming after singing about it for two years.

While moving out was such a liberating move for Anita Nderu, she soon found out that she can’t have her cake and eat it too. She said that she paid her first ever rent on Wednesday and it did not feel nice; considering she was living rent-free for the last three years.

“I also went shopping for household items, now I see why parents wanted to kill us when we broke things, it is not cheap to furnish a house,” wrote Anita.

The move comes weeks before Anita turns 29 on the 9th of Feb. She says she has since finalised plans for a pink pajama party, so it’s all good vibes for Anita Nderu who also revealed that she has successfully battled depression.

“The people close to me know what a struggle and mental torture last year was. I battled depression for 5 months and it was not pretty. They answered so many phone calls of me crying. I began to feel like a negative Nancy and I was. I recovered towards the end of last year and have been well since,” said Anita.

She added: “After today I am happy to announce I will finally have peace of mind. I am so excited I literally cannot stop smiling 😄 ”

So much has happened in the span of one week. After today I am happy to announce I will finally have peace of mind. I am so excited I literally cannot stop smiling 😄 The people close to me know what a struggle and mental torture last year was. I battled depression for 5 months and it was not pretty. They answered so many phone calls of me crying. I began to feel like a negative Nancy and I was. I recovered towards the end of last year and have been well since. Joy came with today's morning however in a special way and I thank the Lord for answering my prayers. Then after living rent free for three years, guess who is finally moving into her own place after singing about it for two years? This girl. I paid rent yesterday, it did not feel nice😂 I also went shopping for household items😂 now I see why parents wanted to kill us when we broke things, it is not cheap to furnish a house. Then I gathered the courage to reach out to companies I have always wanted to work with! So far, so good! Also after being a Samsung fan for 10 years, I discovered another brand whose camera blew my mind! I just might switch. Then! I finalised my birthday plans. The guest list is being handled by Tracy so blame her if you are not on it😂 It will be a VERY PINK pajama party. So excited! Also my party planner is so extra! I love her! It is my last year on the 2nd floor. I turn 29 on the 9th of Feb! This year your presence is not present enough😂 I want gifts. The list goes up tomorrow 😄 Finally! Gospel musician Ole Willy has responded to allegations of child neglect, denying any knowledge of a woman, Lyn, who claims he fathered her baby.

Last week, Lyn claimed that she met Willy in 2016 at a nightclub after a mutual friend introduced them. They hit it off and were blessed with a child in the same year.

“I met Ole Willy at a city night club back in 2016 and was introduced to him by a mutual friend. We clicked and started dating. In the same year, I gave birth and we kept it on the low. He promised to be sending 5k every month for the child’s upkeep, but he rarely fulfills his promise. At times he sends less or doesn’t send anything at all. In December he sent 2k only,” she said.

She added: “I started digging for information about him to know the kind of man my baby daddy was, only to find out that out that he had a family. He keeps telling me that if I go to court, he will not provide even that 2k. And exposing him will be a waste of time because his fans will shut me up. He has never even bought a pair of socks for his son.”

But Ole Willy, who is based in Eldoret, has brushed off the allegations as rumors.

Speaking to Heads Up, he said, “I don’t know the said lady. The story claimed that we met at a nightclub. People close to me know me so well. These are mere rumours. Such wild allegations can even make you question your spirituality.”

Ole Willy is married with two kids.

Comedian Oliver Otieno who is better known as YY is a household name in the Kenyan comedy industry but his personal life has always been a mystery.

The Homa Bay born comedian had a rather troubling childhood as a result of an abusive father. YY made the revelation during an interview with Radio Jambo’s Massawe Japanni.

He narrated how his father, now deceased, was an alcoholic who used to assault his mother. YY, being the firstborn, said he always tried to come in between them in an attempt to protect his mother.

“When I was growing up my dad was kind of abusive. I was a kid in the middle. Nilikuanaonaga saa zingine akifika home anaanza kuchapa mathe, sometimes anakuja kama amelewa so ikaleta a very strong bond between me and my mom.

“Sometimes naona akipiga mathe nago inbetween nafeel I could do something alafu narushwa uko. I think maturity saa zingine inaingianga mtu depending on the experiences not the age. So nikaanza kuona how I can help my mum…Akiosha vyombo naenda naosha ata kama naosha vibaya,” narrated YY.

Massawe Japanni also asked YY: “When he died knowing what kind of man he was how did it change your life?”

The comedian responded: “Before then I used to think maybe if dad was here things would be better. But then I remembered zile shida alipitisha mama yangu na ningependa sana mama yangu aishi mazuri sana, afurahie. Not just my mom but wanawake wote. Ningependa sana wanawake wote waheshimiwe.”

Guardian Angel Talks Growing Up as a Street Child, Dream Collabos, Challenges

$

0

Groove Awards Artiste of the Year 2018 Guardian Angel, real name Audiphaxad Peter, talks music and his plans for 2019 to Nation.co.ke.

Having grown up as a street child, did you ever imagine your life as it is now?

That thought was never there. (Laughs). Most of the time, you imagine that that life is your destiny. I never saw any possibility of getting out of that life. It’s not everyone who really believes in God’s word that He will get you out of a certain situation. I dreamed about getting a small living space but still in the ghetto.

Who are your biggest musical influences at the moment?

Has to be Frank richboy Edwards from Nigeria and TD Jakes.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the near future?

Frank Edwards and Rebecca Malope from Nigeria and South Africa, respectively.

What would you attribute your record hits to, which more often than not even end up gathering over one million views on YouTube?

It’s by the grace of God, honestly. The current hits are not that different from my songs back then. (Laughs). But we have changed how we work and how we produce the songs in terms of it being commercial music. We understand what people want from us and we try to be consistent and practice teamwork.

What would you say is your music’s ultimate purpose?

For a person to get transformation and restoration in their life, as much as music is a source of entertainment to most people. I want to get to a place where I can sing to a sick person and they get healed, or to a person on a wheelchair who will eventually stand and walk away carrying their wheelchair. David, before assuming the throne as king, used to calm King Saul simply by playing the harp. That shows how powerful music is.

How did winning the 2018 Groove Artiste of the Year make you feel in line with your goals and dreams?

Having lost several times in the previous years, winning the award was not really on my mind. I only worked on becoming a successful and great artiste. But winning propels us to a certain level in terms of visibility and placement as far as our brand is concerned.

You also received a number of congratulatory messages from notable names in the entertainment industry after your big win. How did that make you feel?

It felt really great. For a long time, I thought that many people didn’t know I existed. The win made me understand the magnitude of my brand’s recognition.

What’s the inspiration behind your lyrics?

I pray and read the Word of God a lot. The Holy Spirit guides me.

Are they based on real life experiences?

Of course. My target audience, as I said, is those who need encouragement and assurance that God knows what they are going through. I write about things I have gone through.

What was the inspiration behind “Amazing Grace”?

I was in Form Three at the time. I always wanted to produce a song that will have an impact for a very long time, and at that time, I realised hymns did exactly that.

What challenges would you say you face in the gospel music industry in Kenya?

I would say staying relevant. The entertainment industry is at a point where a meme, for example, can literally beat a song in becoming a hit. You may find yourself spending thousands working on a song or a project that will not be relevant at the time of releasing.

Another challenge we face is that people prefer to seek entertainment from comedy rather than things that are really happening. I know we are not in the place to please everyone, but it’s our work’s purpose to get into the hearts of most of our audience.

In a previous interview, you mentioned you are an environmental conservationist. How do you work around your philanthropy?

I have slowed down on that for now so that I can concentrate more on my music. But the goal really is to take up after Wangari Maathai by cleaning up and planting trees around our community.

What should we expect from you this year?

We’re going international in 2019. We believe we have what it takes. We just recently discovered some artistes from Panama who did a cover for my song in Spanish. Most of the time, it’s African artistes who do covers on other songs so this really encouraged me. For these artistes to translate the lyrics from Swahili to Spanish and make a cover means that the song must have had an impact on them. We are in talks with these artistes to have a collaboration.

Sasa Basi: 7 Things to Know About US Based Kenyan Jack of all Trades

$
0
0

Sasa Basi is a US-based Kenyan artiste who identifies himself as a Jack of all trades. He is a fitness trainer, graphic designer, poet, fashion enthusiast and rapper.

Sasa Basi was in the country recently and Nation caught up with him for an exclusive interview.

1. How did it all start? – About 10 years ago I started writing songs before I met up with a few friends and we did a few tracks. I took a break and in 2017 I came back and rebranded as Sasa Basi and I released Lakini Bado.

2. How can you describe your music? – Personally, I like music and mentally I try to be versatile. Mostly I write and sing about everyday life. But sometimes I also like to make feel good music even if it doesn’t have any message. And then there are other songs that I want to pass a certain message – my everyday life and the things that I come across.

3. Why sing in Swahili? – I used to write in English before but I came to realise that if I sing in English I will be competing with millions of people. I also found out that if I sing in English I will not be authentic. When I sing in Swahili I feel authentic and I relate with it.

4. What’s your take on Kenyan music and do you think it has grown? – As Kenyans, we have to consume more for it to grow and for the artistes to also earn. In the US, we are many but majority of the residents there like to listen to what is being made in Kenya. That is why I want to try and push my songs in Kenya so that I can come back to US for them to listen.

5. What are your dreams? – My dream is for Kenyan music to be able to compete with other internationally acclaimed music. I would like to see local music being first appreciated by Kenyans themselves first before others doing it.

6. How can you describe yourself? – I have this mantra that you should treat people the same way you would like them to treat you. I would not like to lose my humility. My ego should never be bigger than who I am.

7. Last words and advice – Just stay focused, push and believe in yourself. Sometimes there is this pressure that you want to be like somebody else which can lead you to quickly give up in the industry. Stay grounded, humble and keep pushing.

The popular radio personality admitted that had a misunderstanding with Charles Bukeko(Papa Shirandula), who is the creator of the show. They, however, remain good friends.

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko’s daughter, Saumu Mbuvi, can now sleep soundly after moving on from her ex Benson Gatu.

According to Saumu, many are the nights she cried herself to sleep because of the Gatu’s philandering ways.

I had moved in with Gatu when he started acting up. He would claim to have gone for a business trip, and I would later learn that it was all lies. He was cheating on me with another woman,” says Saumu.

In an interview with People Daily, Saumu added: “That is why I even posted about it on social media because it was someone I knew, a daughter to one of the governors. I do not mean to tarnish his name or his political ambitions, but this is one story I have to make clear.”

Saumu Mbuvi also disclosed that Gatu would leave her in the house when she was pregnant to go party with his clandestine lover.

“During my last trimester, the guy had disappeared. Even for clinical appointments and other important matters, he was nowhere to be seen. Many are the nights I used to cry myself to sleep. I ended up frustrated, and when I couldn’t take it anymore, I moved back to my parents’ home,” said Saumu.

“One thing I have come to understand is that relationships fail. I am not and will not be the first one to be cheated on and left. Just because I am in the limelight doesn’t mean everything has to be perfect,” she added.

Nyce Wanjeri Left Marriage before but I Took her Back – Tito

Titus Wainaina “Tito Wagithomo”, the estranged ex-husband of Nyce Wanjeri, says this is not the first time the actress has left their matrimonial home.

Speaking to the Star, Tito maintained that he did not leave Nyce. “I did not leave Nyce, but it was her who left together with our daughter.”

He continued: “It was not the first time she left me. When her mother died a few years ago, she had left me again. I came back home and found no one and nothing in the house, but I took her back after she reformed and even got saved.”

Tito’s remarks come days after Nyce Wanjeri finally spilled the beans accusing Tito of, among other things, disrespecting her.

In an interview with Massawe Japanni on Radio Jambo, the mother of one also claimed they could not seek the help of their parents because Tito had never met her parents.

“We couldn’t seek our parents’ intervention because he has never visited my parents, neither has he even met them. We had planned, in the course of the relationship, that he would visit my parents and formally ask them to bless our union. I asked him, several times, why he wasn’t even mentioning to me about plans of visiting my parents… On my end, however, he introduced me to his parents,” said the former ‘Auntie Boss’ star.

But according to Tito, every time he wanted to meet her uncles, Nyce always had issues with her family that hindered him from visiting the family.

“Her mother gave her the go-ahead of us being together. All the times I wanted to meet the family it was hard because she had not solved issues and I wouldn’t know how to tell my family to visit her uncles.”

“She was 20 years and I was 21 years when we met, we had nothing to present, but now we were ready to even do a wedding but unfortunately she left me,” he said.

Una Morgan, a member of the sibling Reggae music group Morgan Heritage, has gotten word that a Senator in Kenya has named his child after her.

Mr Irungu Kang’ata, who is the Senator for Murang’a County, while professing his love for reggae music last week, revealed that he named his second child Una Morgan.

“I named my second child Euna Morgan. How Comes’ is one of Morgan Heritage’s songs that really inspire people because they are highlighting the challenges people go through in life,” said Kang’ata during an interview with the Star.

“I love most of their songs because they touch a lot about family. I sing it to my wife just to encourage her because I am busy with politics, I still have to create time for my family. I love reggae but I think I love Morgan Heritage’s songs more because of the message they have.”

No sooner had the Senator’s revelation reached social media than Una Morgan responded, expressing her gratitude.

She tweeted: “I am sooo humbled by this. I’m grateful my family could have a positive impact on people’s lives and families. I cannot wait to meet her.”
