Born Carolyn Chero Oywa but known to many as Chero, the KTN TV host is most notable for hosting the Str8up Live entertainment show.

She was born in Bomet but was raised in the United States where she spent most of her teenage life. Before returning to the motherland, she had just completed a course in medicine at the Montgomery College in Maryland.

“I came on a trip and fell in love with Kenya because the people were warm and life wasn’t as fast like in the states,” she said in a past interview.

“Soon after coming to Nairobi, I used to turn up so hard till it got boring. This one time I decided to go to Mavuno Church for a service and that was when my love for the arts and screens started.”

Besides presenting, she is also the show’s producer, and MC and a fashionista.

Here are 10 interesting things you probably didn’t know about Chero aka Chero Pie.

1. First date was when I was 13 years. He was 17. We went to the park and had these long awkward moments.

2. I can sing Karaoke so well and I actually host Karaoke singing sessions.

3. I earned my first money by braiding basketball players back in the United States. I was making about 20 dollars.

 4. I hate men who don’t support their children.

5. I love adventure.

6. I love ugali and mrenda.

7. I seem to trust people too much; I sort of give everyone the benefit of the doubt before engaging with them.

8. It was during my first date that this guy tried to kiss me. I had never experienced a kiss and all I can say it was awful; it was a shocker.

9. My greatest fear is making the wrong move, like parting ways with someone I love especially if I hurt them.

10. My most embarrassing moment was this day when my auntie cut off my Foxy Brown hair look for lying. The next day, everyone was laughing at me in school.

“I Worked as a Truck Driver,” Gospel Artist Alemba on Life in The U.S

Gospel music industry entertainer and renown hype-master Alex Mwangi, simply known as Alemba, is back in the country after a stint in the United States.

There have been rumors that he was deported but the musician has already acquired U.S citizenship.

He opened up about his stay in the U.S, what motivated him to return, and more.

Your return to Kenya has been low-key, that after you announced that you had relocated to the United States. Is everything OK?

I’ve been in the country for some time now but I have been busy doing shows here and there.

Why did you leave for the US in the first place?

We were having a discussion with my friends about what people go to do overseas. I took it upon myself to go and experience it first-hand, what life is like in the US. There are guys who helped me settle down but the transition wasn’t an easy one for me.

How was your stay there?

I went as an artiste and I had so many shows to go to. People were always calling me for performances. During my free time I was working somewhere else.

Is it true you were a truck driver?

That is true. I did trucking while there. I worked as a truck driver delivering fresh farm produce across different states. What people don’t know is that it’s so easy for you to go to US for a visit or for shows then jet back home but settling down there is hard for a foreigner.

Really, but why did you leave a successful career at home when your unit System Unit was all the focus… was anything the matter?

Well, back then, I felt like I had hit the ceiling and I needed new challenges in my life and career. That is why I decided to leave.

Were you happy there?

Daily, I’d get messages on my social media platforms and email from people telling me to come back home. Others were asking why I left while others just wanted to know how I was doing. This is what connected me with Kenya while I was away. The truth is, all these concerns motivated me to come back home.

Does your conscience haunt you… do you feel like you made a mistake and had to come back?

Coming back wasn’t an issue. The issue was that what started as a challenge for me had become a lifestyle and I felt that I needed to change that. I also needed to apply what I had learnt during my time there here at home.

Rumor has it that you were deported from the US. Did you have an issue with the law?

Those were just rumors that people were spreading about me but I’m also a US citizen and my wife and son live there. The truth as to why I came back is because I have a mission to change the gospel industry.

Talking about your wife, we never heard of a wedding…

It wasn’t a big thing. In the US people don’t do stuff like they do here in Kenya.

Did your family members attend?

Most of my family members are here in Kenya and didn’t make it for the wedding. The people who were present were our friends and my wife’s family members.

You had a US green card, right?

I still have a green card and I am able to fly to the US; I was never deported, if you are getting back to that.

So why would you leave your wife and son there and come back to start life afresh back at home?

I came back with them and they were here for some time and then went back to the US. My wife is a US citizen and is still in school and has a job there.  That is why they are still there. I visit them when I am able to.

How will you juggle business and taking care of your family?

Like I said, once in a while I get a chance to move there and spend time with them as I keep business going here.

The gospel industry moved on and things are quite different yet you are talking of change…I mean, your fellow System Unit members have moved on and formed powerful stables…

Well, the only change that I have noted is the said artiste. Upcoming artistes no longer have platforms to get their talent nurtured. Things are different and someone needs to change that.

Is this what you are bringing to the table?

I have opened up a company called the Hype Houze Entertainment.  We are looking at building networks that will end up benefiting the musicians and have something like a Christian hangout. We are also looking to mentor upcoming musicians, dancers, DJs and MCs.

Is this more like an agency and production house?

Yes. That’s the main idea but for now we are launching like an agency. In the near future we are looking to grow to a production house. We have both audio and video producers coming on board.

Tanzanian socialite Hamisa Mobetto has poured her heart out about missing a former lover, with all indications pointing to Diamond Platnumz.

Until the Tanzanian singer dropped the bombshell about his philandering ways last year, Diamond and Hamisa had managed to conceal an intimate relationship that culminated in a baby boy.

And it now appears that Diamond’s affection for the beauty ended when she took him to court over child support. This has taken a toll on Hamisa who confessed her feelings on social media.

Hamisa said she misses her former lover as she painted a picture of hurt about her love life.

“Sometimes…I miss you but my heart no longer hurts like it used to,” wrote Hamisa.

In another post, she confessed, “I miss you but I don’t want you back.”

In another post, she intimated that she cries over something that’s not hers.

Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of Ugandan singer Mowzey Radio.

The suspect, identified as Godfrey Wamala, was found at his hideout in a friend’s home in Kyengera, Wakiso district.

Police suspect that the man is most probably the one who inflicted the injuries that eventually claimed the life of the celebrated singer during a brawl at the Sky Lounge bar in Kololo, Entebbe last month.

“The suspect Wamala Godfrey was found at a friend’s home in Kyangera where he has been hiding. He is recording a statement at Katwe Police Station and will be transferred to Entebbe Police Station,” the police statement read.

Going by a video that surfaced online after Radio’s demise, it is evident that the suspect, who happens to be a club bouncer, was at the centre of Radio’s death.

In the graphic clip, the bouncer is seen hitting the late Radio of a wall before lifting him up and dropping him hard on the floor.

The Zuena hitmaker died while undergoing treatment at the Case Hospital in Kampala last Wednesday having been in a coma for two weeks. He suffered serious head and neck injuries.

He was laid to rest last Saturday at his mother’s home in Kagga Nakawuka along the Kampala – Entebbe highway in a ceremony attended by thousands of mourners.

Curvaceous Kenyan socialite Risper Faith is officially off the market. The voluptuous reality television actress finally said “I Do” to her fiance, Brian Muiruri, on Saturday, February 3rd.

The invites-only wedding ceremony was attended by family and close friends at the Radisson Blu hotel, Nairobi.

Coming eleven months since the ‘Nairobi Diaries’ co-stars got engaged and days after Brian was accused of cheating, many thought the wedding would be called off.

That was not the case, however, as the lavish blue and white themed wedding oozed class and glamour.

Among those in attendance at the private affair were rapper CMB Prezzo and bad boy of showbiz Shaffie Weru, who was also the emcee of the day.

“This is a big day for us and we appreciate your presence,” the two told the 200 invited guest in their appreciation speech.

The newlyweds were gifted with a prime property in Nairobi by Brian’s mother as well as a holiday home.

On social media, the lovebirds, who have been together for about four years after Brian slid into Risper’s DMs, broke the news of the special day with special messages.

Risper wrote,”You don’t marry the person you can live with, you marry the person who you cannot live without”, while Brian said, “Greatest day of our lives….more to come. GOD’S BLESSINGS.”

‘Watu Wote’ Actor Blasts ‘The Trend’s’ Amina Abdi For Shoddy Interview

Months after taking over the helm at NTV’s ‘The Trend’ following the departure of Larry Madowo, Amina Abdi has been put on the spot by one of her guests.

Martin Nyakabete, a freelance film script supervisor/continuity person who was part of the production of the Oscar-nominated short film ‘Watu Wote’, has let his feelings known about Amina and her show in a long post on social media.

According to Nyakabete, he almost walked out of the interview because Amina was clearly ill-prepared.

“I should have walked out of the show even before I got in. Girl(Amina) had no idea who we were or our roles in the film WATUWOTE. She didn’t even know our names. There was no brief or anything even after waiting for over an hour. No research from their end about the film,” ranted Nyakabete.

He added, “When the shot (on TV) is not on her she’s not concentrating on anyone speaking but gesturing to the crew instead of paying attention (too bad as film crew you’re able to tell which shot is on air). So you tell us to introduce ourselves(epic fail), then ask too obvious questions and when we try to answer you’re concentrating on other things. As a guest that throws you off and it was so uncomfortable.”

The actor further revealed that he contemplated leaving the show but could not because his mother and her friends were watching.

“I might get crucified for this but oh well..Being a perfectionist sucks. #THE#TREND I’ll be honest, I should have walked out of the show even before I got in. Girl had no idea who we were or our roles in the film WATUWOTE. She didn’t even know our names. There was no brief or anything even after waiting for over an hour. No research from their end about the film… Oh, wait we actually put the mics on by ourselves?. For the 2nd time in my life, I sweat from my tattoo ink. The rage in me was inevitable. Have I worked my entire career for this? f*ck! Yes, f*ck… Why I’m I even here? When the shot (on TV) is not on her she’s not concentrating to anyone speaking but gesturing to the crew instead of paying attention (too bad as film crew you’re able to tell which shot is on air). So you tell us to introduce ourselves(epic fail), then ask too obvious questions and when we try to answer you’re concentrating on other things. As a guest that throws you off and it was so uncomfortable. Why not walk away..I couldn’t.. why? MUM and her friends were watching… part of my Sue&Jonnie family too & other close pals + the respect to my 2 colleagues (The moment to make everyone proud had faded) (just walk away Nyakabete)..,? but I don’t want to trend because of walking out on THE TREND.?. I love filmmaking so much it hurts. So yes I had to flow with the show and embarrass myself. Questions asked have been answered before in different interviews.. Amina Research and ask for production,
-have you watched any of the films you’re competing against…who do you think will win?
-What was challenging about bringing Watu Wote script to life?..
-Why did you want to be involved in this film?..
-Why should people watch this film?..
-What will the audience be thinking about in the car as they drive home after the film?
-if you can mention someone out by name who must come see this production?
– How is this production bringing change to our society? In short help the viewers understand what and why this film has won so many awards and why it got an Oscar nomination.

For christ sake Amina, we had our lead actor… engage her for the viewers, to help them know more about her and the film too.. I mean
-what made you take this role in WATU WOTE.
-What do you love&hate about this character?
-What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role
-Besides yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
-Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue?
-Besides yourself, which actor in this film is going to blow people away?
-If you could play any other character in this film, who would it be?
-how does it feel to be the lead actor in an Oscar-nominated film?

AMINA, AMINA, AMINA,… nimekuita Mara ngapi?…next time kindly research to help the viewers understand our Kenyan based films. I’m out. Oh that thing you made us do about receiving the awards. Total crap. That drama fest ‘trophy’ still had wet paint.

Still, WATU WOTE is a great film and I’m thankful for all the achievements so far.”

At barely 28 years of age, all-round entertainer Oga Obinna has lived on both sides of the financial spectrum; once as a street urchin and now as one of the most sought-after MCs in the country.

The Jack of all trades has been through all sorts of imaginable hardships in his young life and his story continues to inspire many. And he has done it again, taking to social media to inspire his followers never to lose hope.

“Everyday I try to be a better person. The memory of where I’m from makes me work harder and never give up,” wrote Obinna in part.

He revealed that he was once kicked out of his house in Kaloleni because he could not pay rent amounting to Sh3000.

Obinna also revisited his shock sack from Nation FM three years ago, saying; “I was fired from Nation over 3 years ago(been jobless for over 3 years) but I live better now than when I was employed and tied down to a salary.”

He also admitted to contemplating suicide three times when times were hard.

Rapper Tunji Releases Youth Empowerment Anthem ‘Harambee’ [Lyric Video]

The newest kid on the hip-hop and rap block, Tunji, is back with his first project of the new year.

The rapper’s most notable project was ‘Mat za Ronga’ which he released last year. He followed that up with a banging remix featuring Kenya’s current face of rap Khaligraph Jones.

The rapper also teamed up with fellow NuNairobi’s finest – Steph Kapela and Shukid – for the remix of Muthoni Drummer Queen’s powerful ‘Kenyan Message.’

With just one released solo single, Tunji’s fans were clearly yearning for more from him. He has killed the silence and given us something deep to ponder about.

Dubbed ‘Harambee’, this song set to empower the youth by preaching a message of working together to accomplish various goals.

According to Tunji, “the term ‘Harambee’ is derived from the Bantu word ‘halumbe’ which means to push or pull together.

“The song is a message to us, the Youth, calling us to put our differences aside and work together to build a better future for the coming generations.”

Check out Harambee’s lyric video below.

‘Adultery Iko’: Kajairo Parody of Tekno’s Hit ‘Rara’ is the Best Thing You’ll Watch Today[VIDEO]

Kenya’s bonafide King of parodies Kajairo is back like he never left.

After a relatively quiet 2017 that saw the veteran comedian launch his musical career with the release of his debut single ‘MrrDah,’ Kajairo is planning to kick it up a notch this year with more parodies and original music.

His first project this year is exactly how one announces that he’s back and other parody-makers better watch out. Kajairo, who established himself on the iconic comedy TV show, Redyukulass, has parodied last year’s mega banger ‘Rara’ by Nigeria’s Tekno.

The hit is definitely popular in Kenya and Kajairo has done it justice with a parody dubbed ‘Adultery Iko.’ The parody, complete with creative and hilarious visuals, basically depicts the temptations that people face in their day to day lives.

‘Adultery Iko’ is yet another masterpiece by Kajairo and I dare say that fellow parody-maker Eric Omondi has nothing on this guy.

When it comes to amazing praise and worship music, we can always count on Joyce Omondi Waihiga to deliver.

The immensely talented songstress is back with an amazing new single dubbed ‘Jabali.’ Jabali, Swahili for rock, is a declaration of faith, trust, and hope in God. Written by Joyce Omondi herself, it is inspired by Psalm 20:7 & Psalm 91.

Psalm 91 NIV:1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. “

Psalm 20:7 New International Version (NIV):Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”

Joyce Omondi further explains, “Wealth, power, intelligence, and connections cannot offer us a strong foundation on which to stand when the tides of life sweep us off our feet. God is the one, true, firm foundation upon which we can stand.”

If her words aren’t as uplifting, then her beautiful music video will definitely give you life. Watch below.

Diamond Platnumz and Zari Hassan are undoubtedly the ‘it couple’ of East Africa and beyond. For years now, the two lovebirds have constantly made headlines over their “odd” relationship.

While their romance was first looked down on by a majority of their fans, the Ugandan and the Tanzanian showbiz players have grown quite the thick skin and they are now more accepted.

The main issue of contention happens to be their age difference. The Ugandan businesswoman is 37 while the Tanzanian music sensation turned 28 last October.

While such an age difference between lovers is nothing new in the modern world, it is still quite a shocker if looked from a different perspective.

That’s exactly what has happened after a picture emerged on the internet showing the controversial couple when they were younger.

While we are yet to verify the authenticity of the claims, whoever leaked the image says the pictures were taken in 1993. That means Diamond was only 4 years old while Zari was barely a teenager.

DK Kwenye Gym! Gospel Singer Listens to Fans’ Concerns, Hits the Gym After Fat-Shaming

Gospel music hitmaker DK Kwenye Beat has finally started his weight-loss journey.

Since the beginning of the year, the ‘Furi Furi’ singer has been the victim of fat-shaming on social media. While some of his fans were legitimately concerned about his health, a majority of his fans used the opportunity to troll and poke fun at the singer.

This prompted the singer to respond, vowing to do something about his weight.

“I am not comfortable with my weight and the most annoying question people keep on asking me is, why are you fat? Most of the people who ask me this are not genuine. However, some are concerned about my health. I have started my weight loss programme, which entails a healthy meal plan and a workout plan,” the singer said.

And just to prove his promise was not hot air, DK Kwenye Beat has shared, through Instagram, his moments in the gym.

In a series of videos, the singer is seen working himself into a sweat with the help of trainers, with Citizen TV journalist Willis Raburu cheering him on.

DK is currently flying high with a new song, Kijana wa Kayole, which depicts his life in Kayole.

Check out some of his workouts below. The guy is really working hard.

Tanzanian singer Mr Nice has dropped a new song as he attempts to re-establish himself in the game.

The ‘Kidali Po’ hitmaker was one of the celebrated singers across the East African region in the early 2000s with hit songs like ‘Fagilia’, ‘Kikulacho’, ‘Rafiki’, ‘Mbona Umeniacha’ and others.

After years away from the game, the singer recently relocated to Kenya to revive his music career. He is said to be working on a comeback album dubbed ‘Kioo.’

Two months after releasing his debut single- Yaya-, the veteran hitmaker is back with a second installment dubbed ‘Tuheshimiane.’

Just like ‘Yaya’, the singer uses ‘Tuheshimiane’ to tell off fake friends and enemies.

The song is somewhat personal to Mr Nice who has been the victim of malicious rumors ranging from his alleged death, financial struggles, drug abuse, and positive HIV status.

Check out his new video below.

Five Things to Know About Multi-Talented Hot96 Radio Presenter David Oyuke

David Oyuke is the quintessential Jack of all trades. Known by his stage name, BlackSkillz, David is a poet, voice-over artist, communications professional, radio host (Hot 96) and hip-hop artist.

He also has a poetry collection, Flowers in A Broken Vase, which he began writing in 2014 and recently got it published.

Here’s his Take 5.

  1. Exactly how many hats do you wear?

I’m actually the flat cap type.  I wear a couple of hats though because I am also a voice narrator, leadership facilitator, husband and a hopeful Arsenal fan.

  1. Do you have a favourite hat?

Well, I think I’ve come to appreciate how all these roles merge and work in unison. It is easy to have them all work together when at the core of each is an unmovable purpose. I’m passionate about people and the stories each carries with them. Everything I do is anchored on that, so it is very fulfilling to get an opportunity to maximise what I am passionate about through different fields.

  1. How excited are you about finally getting to publish your poems? How would you describe this work of art?

I’m extremely excited. I began writing it late 2014, and completed it in 2015. It is a book about overcoming the various challenges that life throws at you, rediscovering self-worth and how much we human beings matter in a world that quickly renders people invisible. It’s a book that I hope can remind people that they matter despite everything happening around them, a book for #ThoseWhoDream (the hashtag attached to the launch and the book), thus Flowers In A Broken Vase.

Writing the book was a point of joy, but waiting that long to see it published was an emotionally bruising affair. I had to battle to still see myself as a poet after so long.

I would have published it sooner had it not been for financial constraints. Eventually, two people came through and ensured the book came into being. My wife and I chose self-publishing to be in control of the process, to be the curators of what it is and what it represents, which leaves no room for misrepresentation that would likely occur if I contracted a publishing house to do the job for me.

  1. So love and marriage have clearly influenced your art. Do all artists generally just pick up from their real life and turn these experiences into creation?

My life certainly influences my art. My wife’s support has been tremendous. She helped edit my book and basically worked on it as if it were her own, so she finds a sense of joy in it as well. The truth is, everything that comes from within us as creatives is viewed from different lenses. Marriage is a tremendous lens for me. Having someone you believe in and who believes in you, someone you get to build a life with, makes you see the world through more forgiving eyes, eyes that know that this world is full of possibilities if only we worked together. I get the privilege of carrying some of these things into my art and I believe it is the same with other people who take aspects of their life into their art because ultimately, our art and our life are most of the time endless reflections of each other.

  1. What have you learned from being in radio and what advice would you give someone trying to get a foot in?

It is a remarkable place to grow in. When that microphone is on, it stops being just about you, the person speaking, but about the person listening as well. I’ve grown to care for those who listen to me, they aren’t a means to an end, but amazing and unique individuals.

I’ve learned that in radio, just like any other field, you need to know who you are or you will end up reflecting everything and everyone that comes your way.

Authenticity is a currency few trade in. Know your value, and then value your value. Never lose yourself. If you end up changing, then let that change be kinder, more appreciative, more inspiring. Your talent can be remarkable, but who you are inside is the real gift that no one can duplicate.
