Everything to Know About Music Producer Safe Joe

Joseph ‘Safe Joe’ Mugweru is a Kenyan music producer who prides himself on being self-taught through YouTube.

Safe Joe is also known for clinching the second position in the first season of reality show ‘Blaze: Be Your Own Boss’.

He talked to Nation about his upbringing in Dagoretti Corner and being the breadwinner in a family of four at a young age.

How did all this start?

I remember at the time I was in Eldoret working at a timber yard and, because we did not have skills, we were carrying big logs from morning to evening. I remember one day, when there was no work at the yard, I went home and asked myself “What else can I do?” It hit me that I can also produce because I had seen many producers produce my work; I was a rapper and a poet before moving to Eldoret. I loved music but I was broke.

How did you get your first studio?

In 2013, I met an uncle, one of those uncles who you do not talk to because they live in the US. He asked me what I wanted to do and I told him I wanted to be a music producer. He bought me a studio, which I called Safe Con, and I now had a business to run in Nairobi. My studio was initially closed down three times because I did not have any customers. It was hard and I’d charge between Sh1,500 and Sh3,000, depending on how broke I was. Not having a track record, no one wanted to work with me despite my extremely low costs. Often, I couldn’t meet the rent.

You learned all your skills through YouTube?

Yes, almost 100 per cent. I already had some knowledge about music production but not enough. I spent nights watching YouTube videos, and then during the day, I’d try to find artistes who needed songs recorded.

You were doing well and then something went wrong?

For some years, all was well and my name and business had started to flourish. I was comfortably making rent in a much better neighbourhood, and I had consistent clients. I lost my mother in 2009 and things got tough for our family. According to our culture, I had to be the father of the house which meant I had to work twice as hard. So it was ironic when I broke down and went into depression in 2016 because I had not mourned my mother all that time. The doctor said I needed to rest, so I closed down the studio.

How did you bounce back?

I carried my equipment to Eldoret because I am a workaholic. Someone I had worked for approached me and asked me to do some work to show how devolution had changed the lives of Kenyans. I was tasked to produce the soundtrack. After the project, an artiste I was working with told me about a competition that was taking place called “Blaze: Be Your Own Boss”. I had no idea what it was about and went on to Google it. I was surprised what they were offering, but my major interest was the show. I auditioned for it and three weeks later they called me. After further auditions I got into the Blaze house.

Why do you think they called you to participate?

I was an upcoming music producer and I was dealing with upcoming artistes. That experience changed my view of the industry. With the various challenges that we were tasked, we dealt with the best people in the industry. Right now, I know the right channels to use and how to run my business. The Blaze package also took us through Centomony, which is an entrepreneurship course that focuses on how to handle finances in your business and personal life. That completely transformed how I operate my business.

Have you noticed changes about yourself since then?

First, my financial status, let’s say that. My mindset and business sense in general are much sharper now. What they taught us was not what I was doing, they gave us the tools to be able to get out there and apply them. At the end it has made me more of a businessman and given me the networks that are important for my business. Apart from music, I was also a photographer. I realised I couldn’t do everything alone, so I partnered with people who had different expertise so that I could do what I love, which is producing music.

What are you working on now and with whom?

I’m working with partners now to make the brand grow. I also have a few artistes I’m working with including Stone Jiwe, among other upcoming artistes. I also did some tracks for the soundtrack of Wanuri Kahiu’s controversial film, “Rafiki”. I take on projects that I know will get me out of my comfort zone. I believe if we stay in one place for too long, we shrink. My aim is to consistently move forward. I also recently started teaching music production at Talanta Institute.

I Have no Regrets Quitting Govt Job to Become a DJ- ‘Battle of the Beats’ Winner DJ Roudge

Born Rodgers Ray Ondieki and hailing from Kisii Town, DJ Roudge is the next big thing in the turntabling scene.

Last month, DJ Roudge was crowned the winner of the Smirnoff deejaying competition, Battle of The Beats. The competition drew a total of 19 contestants from across the country.

Following his big win, DJ Roudge talked to Pulse recently and revealed more details about his journey.

Who is DJ Roudge?

I am just a simple guy from Kisii town who found my passion in being a DJ even though I started turning tables professionally four years back.

Where did you learn how to turn tables?

I first started with playing on Virtual DJ when I was in second year of campus. Then after I was done with school, my good friend, DJ Jeff, started teaching me how to turn tables because he had a full DJ kit. He taught me everything that I know today.

You hold a degree in banking and finance and a masters in procurement, why did you settle on being a DJ?

I started working at a very young age. Before joining campus I was a supermarket attendant in Embakasi.

After graduating from campus, I was a bank teller with a leading bank after staying at home for a couple of months, but I was not making enough money to sustain myself.

Then I got a job with the county government as an accountant but still was not making enough to pay my bills so I settled on being a full-time DJ and I have no regrets.

How did you join the Smirnoff battle of beats competition?

I first heard about the competition from one of the mentors DJ Slim from Kisumu who advised me to join the competition.

I was in Nairobi at the moment since I was working here during the weekdays and traveling back to Kisii over the weekends. I then left for Kisumu where I went for the auditions.

Did you think you would pass the auditions?

No I didn’t. I didn’t think I would make it. I went before the judges with all the equipment I had. I went with the full DJ kit and I was ready to turn tables.

I was to go in fourth and while I was standing in line I heard the judges telling the guy who was on stage at the moment that they wanted an entertainer and not someone who was just coming to turn tables and that is how I got a ‘tip-off’. If I had not heard that I would have been disqualified during the auditions.

What was the most difficult part of the competition for you?

The elimination days. Every Monday one person was eliminated from the competition and generally Mondays were difficult days for all of us.

For me the hardest day was the day I was put up for nomination. It was last week to the finals and I was up against a guy who was not only a DJ but also a producer so he had an upper hand. I thought I would be eliminated but I made it.

Who was your biggest support system during the competition?

My family and friends. They kept praying for me and encouraging me.

What was your reaction when you won the competition?

At that time, I couldn’t believe it. It had not sank in completely and I was still in shock. Everything became a reality to me when I was the DJ for the Smirnoff New Year party on New Year’s Eve in Mombasa where I was slotted in between Ali Kiba and Sauti Sol.

This was huge for me because it was my first official performance and I did this in front of 8,000 people, sharing a stage with amazing artistes.

What was you reward from Smirnoff.

I got a one-year contract with EABL and Capital FM. I also got a full DJ kit, a MacBook Pro, a contract with Mr P and Bread House also promised something.

I have my party at the end of the month and many clubs have reached out to have me turn tables for them, I was just at 1824 recently.

What challenges have you faced as a young upcoming DJ?

There are a lot of challenges in the industry especially when one is not yet established. There is a big gap between the established DJs and the upcoming ones where the established ones do not associate with the latter.

The other challenge is many event organisers do not look at the skills one has but rather at the number of social media followers one has.

What is your plan for the New Year?

My plan is to establish myself and build my brand like DJ Joe Mfalme, DJ Stylez and DJ Jeff who I all admire and look up to. This year, I am coming for the top spot in the industry.

Gospel singer Bahati has assured that a big wedding ceremony is on the cards.

The Award-winning musician stole the show on New Year’s when he proposed to his prayer partner Diana Marua.

The ‘Being Bahati’ reality television actor pulled out all the stops to pop the question before thousands of fans who were at the Thika Municipal Stadium to usher in the New Year.

The proposal came two years after Bahati and Diana Marua made their relationship public and over a year after their traditional wedding ritual in October 2017.

Speaking to Pulse, Bahati explained why he finally proposed, saying: “Everyone knows that Diana and I are an item. Everyone knows that she is my one and only but never has anyone heard or seen me propose to her, something I consider a very important process. A man can do a traditional wedding but one needs to put a ring on it. We are taking a step at a time.”

He further clarified that the proposal wasn’t stage-managed.

“It is funny how some people make fun out of everything. I wasn’t stage-managing this. This was to tell Diana before the whole world that I am all hers and that I want to spend the rest of my life with her. I wanted to clear doubts that we are just dating,” said Bahati.

He concluded: “Yes, a big ceremony is on the way.”

Singer Nandy Talks Love for Kenya, Secret Behind Making Hit Songs, Coke Studio Africa

Nandy is one of the fastest rising female artistes from Tanzania.

Known for hit songs such as “One Day”, “Nagusagusa”, “Ninogeshe”, Nandy earned a second place spot at the Tecno Own the Stage (2015/2016) music contest held in Nigeria. This saw Nandy go on to make her debut on Coke Studio Africa in 2017.

Nandy spoke to Buzz during her second visit to Kenya for the forthcoming Coke Studio Africa.

It’s been hit after hit for Nandy, what’s the secret?

Many thanks for the compliment. I have a team that works very steadfastly behind me to ensure everything about my brand runs smoothly. This includes song writing, production, and management. I can’t miss a hit when I have such great writers around me.

Does this mean you don’t write your music at all?

All my songs have been written by different song writers like Marioo, Jay Melody, Logic, Magic, Benson, Ndela among others. I want the best so I sample music from each one of these talented song writers. That way I end up with hits.

Why do you refer to yourself as the African Princess?

(Laughs) My manager gave me that name from my dressing in my first song “Nagusagusa”. He said that I looked like a princess and I should consider the name. My fans liked it and it stuck.

What do you like about Kenya?

I’m receiving such love and a huge reception from Kenyans. They love my music and each time I see that then it makes me love Kenya more. I feel indebted to them to keep giving better music.

What brings you to Kenya this time?

I’m here for Coke Studio Africa the second time in a row and this is just humbling.

How’s your second experience been?

Coke Studio opens you up to great experiences and opportunities. For instance, I’ve been paired to collaborate with Skales from Nigeria and there’s a lot of things I’ve learnt from him, and the Nigerian market as well, that I would otherwise have remained oblivious of. He has also learnt a lot from me and the East African market as well. We are both growing our brands trying to widen our reach.

Do you think Swahili music can experience a breakthrough internationally?

My best example is Diamond who’s gone international with Swahili music and keeps flying our flag high across the borders. It’s now crystal clear that good music and a good melody cannot be barred by language barriers. We sing along to lots of music whose meanings we don’t understand.

You have collaborated with a lot of underground artistes, why do you choose to do so and doesn’t it drag your brand behind?

I know how it feels to be down there and in need of someone to prop you up, then they all turn you down. What I’m simply doing is sending the elevator down. I’ve never featured anyone before so I decided to get featured by different artistes in a bid to get them out there and grow their brands to the point where they can stand on their own.

You appear to be very close to Aslay, how do you two relate?

I view him as family. He supports me to the core and is always there to keep me spot on, musically. We’ve been very close and I’d firmly say that he’s played such a mega role towards the brand I have today.

Why did you leave Banana Zorro’s band to concentrate on solo projects?

I have always wanted to go solo but I chose a band after someone advised me that it would grow my voice and the teasing, that I often got of having a childish voice, would finally cease. I took up the challenge and thankfully it worked. I then joined the Tecno Own the Stage Karaoke Contest which acted as a platform to be recognised by my management team. The rest is history.

Do you think music is paying in East Africa and do you live completely off music?

Yes. I live off my music and it does pay pretty well in East Africa, depending on your position in the industry and the size of your brand. All one needs to do is work hard and be patient until it’s time to earn what you’ve always desired. Today, I take part in brand endorsements due to the growth I’ve experienced over the years.

What should we expect from Nandy in the near future?

More great music that will keep enthusing my fans is what you should expect. All I can ask from them is more, and more support until the likes Beyoncé and Rihanna recognise that they have a new force to reckon with.

Jalango ‘Schools’ Khaligraph Jones and Naiboi as Debate on Local Music Airplay Heats Up

$

For the umpteenth time, the perennial debate about what ails the local music industry has reared it’s ugly head.

As we have come to expect, the debate has been characterised by blame games, with rapper Khaligraph Jones leading an onslaught of local music acts in pointing fingers at Kenyan media personalities and presenters.

Khaligraph Jones, while in Nigeria for the Soundcity Awards, in which he was nominated for the MVP Best Hip Hop award that was eventually won by South Africa’s AKA, was bullish as he took to the gram to taunt Kenyan presenters.

He wrote: “I am planning on Bringing at least 10 big Kenyan media personalities/Radio presenters to Nigeria for a 10 day trip which I myself shall cater for, I want to see if some of y’all will be recognized by your Nigerian fans or if you even have fans at all here, it would be very sad if you don’t though 😂😂 🇰🇪🇰🇪🇰🇪🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬🇳🇬 #respecttheogs.”

Khali’s cause received backing from other local acts such as Naiboi, Vivian, BonEye, Sauti Sol’s Bien Aime, and many others; some of whom also offered to sponsor more presenters to Nigeria.

Naiboi, in particular, wrote: “So after making calls and confirming how serious the OG is about this(trip) I have decided I will pay for 5more so that’s a total of 15. Let’s make it a Real experience for them.#respecttheOG#Naiboiworldwide#usipimemwanaume.”

Based on the comments we sampled from several local artistes, it clear that they are blaming presenters for not giving Kenyan acts enough airplay on radio and television.

But, Jalang’o, arguably one of Kenya’s most prominent media personalities, did not take the mudslinging lying down as he hit back almost immediately.

The Milele FM presenter explained that presenters should not be blamed because they are not in charge of selecting the music that goes on air.

Responding to Khaligraph, Jalas wrote: “Khaligraph_jones is planning a trip for presenters and media personalities to NAIJA to see if they have fans there since we play too much Naija and soon the next trip will be to bongo! Yes, we don’t have fans there but before you start blaming us! Did you know that presenters don’t even choose music played on Radio and if they do they have very little say on what goes on air? No you dint! Before music is scheduled on Radio it is researched on and all we do is play! The other day we were involved in making our playlist, I posted it here asking you to help us and the results were shocking almost! 50% Bongo 40% Naija! Today on Apple Music there are only 6 Kenyan songs in top 100 Kenya! So hata hiyo pia ni ma presenters na djs wamepanga? But the question is how did we get here to NAIJA and BONGO? Marketing! Aggressiveness! And getting out your comfort zone! If you are still depending on Radio and Tv to make you big then you have nothing in this industry! There are too many avenues! YouTube, Spotify, Apple music..then we have social media platforms! Diamond launched his Album in more than 10 countries some of you have not launched even for your family! We can’t play what we don’t know! I personally have hosted and booked you guys for events and paid you guys for shows even if it’s little. I have done my part! The other day @thekingkaka launched his Album they didn’t even show up and the other day saw them begging selfies with Diamond just like they did with Neyo instead of asking for collabo! Khaligraph you know what hard work is and what it took you to be there! Sautisol dint have to depend on us! Hii ni 2019 na mkiendelea hivi mtatukuna saana.”

Jalango did not stop there; He also spared some words for Naiboi.

He wrote: “Ehe…mkisha tulipia? Tufike huko na hatujulikani..ehe? Halafu turudi…ehe? Alafu turudi tuulize wakenya wanataka nini…waseme wanataka Naija na Wasafi…ehe alafu tuwalazimishe na ngoma zenyu donge? Check my page bro..we were making our playlist the other day I posted asking them what they want to listen to…almost 50% Bongo…and 40% Naija 10 % Kenya…they said they want to listen to you yes because you make music they want! It took you to get out of your comfort zone and even rebranding…so badala ya kutingisha meza ya ma presenter watu hata hawaamui nini inachezwa kwa radio aanza kupea wakenya kitu wanataka..ka 2 in 1! Bro did you know presenter have very little say on schedules? Maybe no!”

On the online discussion forums, the opinion was divided, with some fans slating Khaligraph Jones and Naiboi for the misguided attack on presenters.

Once again, the debate boiled down to the quality of Kenyan music which has for a long time been considered inferior to Nigerian, South African, and neighbouring Tanzania.

In truth, Kenyan musical content, or lack thereof, is just one of many reasons why the local industry is still playing catch-up.

For instance, the State has failed to enforce a policy that requires media owners to play 70% local content. In Nigeria, this quota is set at an impressive 80%.

Other additional problems currently facing the Kenyan music industry include lack of professional musicians, musical knowledge, media support, and financial and infrastructural support from the government.

When all is said and done, we can’t ignore that the tide is changing, albeit slowly. The long-haul game of industry catch-up is a process that will take some time.

Blame games do nothing to help this cause!

In recent times, however, the two appear to have buried the hatchet for the sake of their daughters.

Musician Otile Brown has distanced himself from rumors going around that Vera Sidika’s beauty parlor has flopped.

Word on the street has it that the socialite is closing down shop after netizens noticed that the salon’s Instagram page was inactive for quite a while.

Vera Sidika also recently advertised vacancies at the posh salon, fuelling rumors that her staff had quit for greener pastures. Others speculated that Vera Sidika was unable to run the beauty shop.

But the former reality television actress has since dismissed the rumors following her month-long holiday in the U.S.

She took to Insta on Monday to claim that an ex was spreading the false rumors but did not indicate whether it was Otile Brown.

“I was told that some ex was spreading these rumors. They wish. NEVER closed at all. Only on Christmas Day. People like it when they see you fall. So even when you ain’t falling they’ll force others to believe you have,” said Vera in response to a comment by a fan.

Naturally, Otile Brown bore the brunt of Vera’s allegations. This forced the ‘Chaguo la Moyo’ hitmaker to pen a heartfelt post on Instagram yesterday alluding that ‘you know who’ has been mudslinging his name to impress the masses.

Otile Brown made sure he put his point across as he used his native Swahili Sanifu to express himself like a true gentleman.

There’s no music industry in Kenya but an entertainment scene full of hedonistic and narcissistic talents who need to meet faith!

Those are the words of secular-turned-gospel rapper Collo, formerly of Kleptomaniax alongside Nyashinski and Roba.

The ‘Bazokizo’ rapper is one of many rappers who has added his voice to the ongoing debate sparked by Khaligraph Jones on the dire state of Kenyan music industry.

According to Collo Mfalme, local artistes have themselves to blame for all that is happening to them.

“All what is happening to our Kenyan artists, in my opinion, is of our own doing & failing to present a solution hence, we’re ‘bird boxed’ with no divine wisdom to understand the true meaning of teamwork,” said Collo.

He also noted that the media is owned and controlled by politicians who have no interest in empowering artistes.

Read his full rant below.

“The Media Mountain including most (if not all) broadcast stations are owned and controlled by politicians who have no interest at all in empowering artists, especially for an existing majority of musicians who lack character. The peculiar patterns of seeing radio presenters, journalist including other members of the 4th Estate desiring to be the ones walking the red carpet in events also amazes me but Nairobi has also taught me a valuable lesson, “game ni game”… All what is happening to our Kenyan artists in my opinion is of our own doing & failing to present a solution hence, we’re ‘bird boxed’ with no divine wisdom to understand the true meaning of team work. For example, is it ever possible for your Top 10 or even 5 artists to come together in their own accord for a common goal with regards to alternative platforms and avenues or is it the same old pattern of ‘mi nimnoma kkuliko’? There’s no industry here but an entertainment scene full of hedonistic and narcissistic talents who need to meet faith! Never chase success… attract it by knowing who you are! #Jijue #FOMniYESU.”

Young Kenyan acrobat Wendy Waeni Syombua has started her secondary school education.

The globally recognized gymnast was among thousands of anxious Form One students who started reporting to school from Monday this week.

Waeni, 13, in spite of her hectic schedule, scored an impressive 340 marks out of a possible 500 in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams.

She scored 69% in English, 69% in Kiswahili, 60% in Mathematics, 74% in Science and 68% in Social Studies to guarantee a spot in one of the top provincial schools in the country – St. George’s Girls Secondary School in Nairobi.

Waeni was admitted on Wednesday on a State-sponsored scholarship.

Taking to social media, Waeni said she was happy and ready for the next phase of her education.

She also shared pictures posing in her new school uniform looking quite sharp and ready for high school. In one of the pictures, Waeni posed with St.George’s Principal Lucy Rukunga.

“Finally admitted at St Georges Girls High School. Am really happy to join High School today,” wrote Waeni.

Waeni was recently named the UNICEF’s Inspirational and Enthusiastic Young Champion Ambassador, just days after sitting her final exams.

She started acrobatics at the tender age of four and has performed for prominent dignitaries and world leaders, including Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, John Mahama of Ghana and the British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Funny Old PHOTO of Jalang’o will Inspire you to Trust the Process

This man Jalang’o! He has been the talk of the town, admired and disliked in equal measure, following his unpopular opinion on the hot debate about the struggling Kenyan music industry.

Amid the sharp criticism, the Milele FM presenter has maintained that local music acts need to change their work ethic if they are to rule the airwaves like their Bongo and Nigerian counterparts.

For someone who has had such an immense career in media as an actor, television/radio presenter, events MC, Jalang’o undoubtedly knows a thing or two about work ethic.

It must be why he has been so passionate about calling for harder work from local musicians.

On Thursday, Jalas took to social media to remind his fans and haters alike to trust in the process. He shared a picture taken about fourteen years ago when he was just a budding actor in a play – Aminata.

Jalango used the throwback picture to inspire, writing: “This is me acting as “Jumba” in the play Aminata! This in Tombe girls High school in KISII. The year is 2005! Alot can change in a very short time…Ruthless Focus! Always respecting and trusting the process…giving your all and where you come from to always motivate you! At this time all I had was God and everyday all I did was pray and work hard to ensure my family would move from our status! Sadly my Dad passed on the day I got my first employment…If it’s your business light it up before people believe in you! You must always know that not everybody loves you being at the top but only you want to see yourself at the top! God above everything!”

In another post, he reiterated that; “There will never be a replacement for hard work.”

Parasailing; the new recreational item on our bucket list thanks to media girl Patricia Kihoro and filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu.

Parasailing is a popular vacation thrill where a person is towed behind a boat while attached to a specially designed canopy wing that resembles a parachute, known as a parasail wing.

According to Patricia Kihoro, it looks scary but it is breathtaking. I’m inclined to agree with her!

The ‘AfroCentral’ radio show presenter shared a short clip of her parasailing experience alongside ‘Rafiki’ filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu on Instagram, and it was enough to convince a lot of her fans to add parasailing to their bucket lists.

The two rafikis, who worked together in the lesbian love story ‘Rafiki’, did the parasailing in Costa Rica; the newest favorite holiday destination among Kenyan travel vloggers and globetrotters.

Patricia traveled to Costa Rica’s Capital San Jose as part of her 33rd birthday celebrations, taking a flight from Nairobi to NewYork and through Panama.

A couple of days ago, Ms Kihoro served some sauce on IG as she stepped out in a bikini looking sunkissed by the tropical sun above Manuel Antonio, one of the popular destinations in Costa Rica.

In another post, Kihoro shared a picturesque shot of her parasail with Wanuri, gliding through the air on a Superman parachute.

“So @wanuri and I did a thing. Parasailing was breathtaking,” she wrote.

She captioned her video: “It looks scary but it honestly was one of the most calming things I’ve ever done. With a couple of flashes of fear every once in a while when @wanuri would shift to try get more comfortable.”

The Award-winning singer/songwriter is the cause of widespread laughter on social media courtesy of his viral video in which he attempts to perform the miracle of walking on water.

In the short clip which has been viewed thousands of times and shared countless times more, Pitson is seen playing the role of a pastor on the edge of a swimming pool. He is surrounded by his purported congregants as he convinces them that 2019 is the year they walk on water after a failed attempt in the previous year.

“Last year, we were here. We tried walking on water but it did not work. But that was last year and this is another year,” Pitson preaches.

He captioned the funny clip of the failed miracle, “Washirika wakitegemea Imani ya mchungaji, miujiza hukwama saa zingine  #faithgoals2019 Kutembea juu ya maji labda 2020.”

“NONSENSE!!!” Massawe Japanni Blasts Betty Kyallo for Dancing to Khaligraph’s Explicit Track – VIDEO

A video of Betty Kyallo dancing alongside Khaligraph Jones as he raps explicit lyrics has touched a nerve in radio personality Massawe Japanni.

In the short clip, the K24 presenter is seen dancing awkwardly alongside Khaligraph Jones as he freestyles lyrics of his recent controversial release titled Stick/Miti.

Last October, Khaligraph Jones released the explicit track sampled from the original song, ‘Lovers & Friends’, by Usher, Luda, and Lil Jon. Khali’s sample mostly drew negative backlash due to its lewd and ratchet lyrical content.

Two months later, it(‘Stick/Miti’) is the subject of fresh criticism from Massawe Japanni as a result of the ongoing debate sparked by Khaligraph about Kenyan music lacking content and airplay.

The Radio Jambo presenter took to her Instagram account yesterday to fire shots, killing two birds with one stone. She trashed the song and also asked Betty Kyallo a pressing question.

“How do I even announce this song on-air???? Support Kenyan music activists leteni opinions na mawe.. @bettymuteikyallo what’s there to dance to?
NON..NON..NONSENSE!!!” fired Massawe.

We are still waiting for Betty Kyallo to address the nation. We need answers.

In the meantime, check out the clip below.

Everything to Know about Gospel Group P31

$

0

P31 is an upcoming all-female gospel music group.

The trio spoke to Pulse:

You come across as cool; hot, urban and real girly. Is that the common trait in the trio?

Well, we are young and happy girls who enjoy what girls like doing. That is reflected in our songs. We do sleep-overs at each other’s homes, cook and share meals and chit-chat a lot. See, besides singing we are really close friends.

Have you always been so?

Not really. We were doing different projects before we met in 2015. At the time, Esther was working on her solo career while Nellius and Shani had come together as a group. After hearing each other’s flow, we decided to do projects together and we have been on it till today.

Is it true that ‘P31’ stands for the Bible verse, Proverbs 31?

You are right. Being a gospel rap group, we settled on Proverbs 31, which talks of being a woman of substance.

The name both inspires us and our fans, mostly girls to be that woman of great virtues. We are go-getters, which is what P31 is all about.

Talking of go-getters, you were nominated for Groove Awards in 2016 just after hooking up and releasing Its Time. Did that come as a surprise?

It (2016) was a good year. We were nominated under the New Gospel Rap Group category and the same year, we also got an Extreme Awards nod. That made us believe in ourselves and it is out of such that we garnered a sizable fan base. Around that time, we recorded an EP called The P31 Project that had three tracks. That was our introduction to the industry.

Was it like your breakthrough moment?

Honestly, just like any other girl-group, we had our challenges and it was getting into 2017 that we got most hype with the release of Achilia and Testimony, tracks that were received very well even prompting the PMVA nomination we got, something that came as a sweet surprise.

You didn’t expect this?

The truth is that getting a Groove and Extreme awards nod was a bit easy as those are gospel platforms. PMVA is a very competitive awards as it does not focus on gospel alone but the entire industry.

Getting nominated alongside the big wigs in the industry gave us a fresh impetus and that is beginning to open doors for us. We are back on our feet and determined to give our fans the best we can.

Many gospel groups have suffered break-ups. In fact, it’s like you are the only ones left…

And we thank God for his Grace. It is true that many groups, not only gospel, break up mostly due to management issues as well of failure to have a clear vision.

As P31, it is good for our fans to know that we each have solo careers as artistes and only come together when we are doing our common projects. Such leeway gives one an open valve to enhance their individual strength.

Are you in any of the so-called gospel cartels?

No, we are not and we are not about to join any. The pressure has been there to have join some and honestly, we have suffered due to our decision not to as this comes with its own consequences.

Some (gospel DJs) will neither play your music nor give you gigs if you don’t align with them but we trust that if our music is good enough and our fans embrace it, which is all we need to get there. We manage ourselves and have a good understanding of the industry and so we are able to get past the debris.

What do you mean “a good understanding”?

We have an entertainment background. One of us (Lesynem) is a producer, director and filmmaker while another (Shani) is good with filming and editing.

The other (Nellius) is a good marketer. And just for the record, Nellius will strictly be on her solo projects this year so people should not wonder when they don’t see a lot of her around P31 projects for now.

What are you working on right now?

We are actually working on three singles first that will be released before mid-year. Our ultimate goal is to release an album. One of the songs, the first we plan to release, is called Esther. It is a good jam with the kind of old-school flow.

Generally, you are set to steam up the industry in 2019.

You said it. Sure thing!

One on One with American-Nigerian Singer WurlD

0

Wurld is a singer-songwriter signed with Universal Records who has written for some of the most famous artistes in the world.

He spoke to Nation about his plans:

With a career in IT already in motion, how difficult was it to choose your current career path?

It wasn’t difficult, being in college and studying IT prepared me for so many different things. While I was in college music was a significant part of my life, and I met lots of people in the industry who helped me get there, so making the transition was relatively easy.

You write all of your music; where do you draw inspiration from and what is your favourite part of the process?

I get most of my inspiration from people, experiences, and things that I’ve learned since being a kid in Lagos to a young man in Atlanta and my favourite part is creating the music and finally performing it.

Tell me of your musical journey from moving to the US for school until releasing “Evolution.”

Everything was a learning process for me from finding my ‘sound’ which took a lot of time, experiences and learning. I could say “Evolution” was an introductory EP that was all about me finding myself and a lot of people don’t know that.

One of your earliest successes was song writing for Mario. How did this come about?

A lot of people referred me, he was in Atlanta working on his album, and I was fortunate to be called into the song writing session, and we started creating music! It was great; I consider him my friend.

Two of your most popular releases are “Contagious” and “Show You Off” tell me more about these songs.

“Show You Off” was my first introduction to the African market because of the Afro-fusion. Coming together with Shizzi and Walshy Fire was very organic. That’s what you hear about good music, people coming together in the purest form and effortlessly creating music. I worked on “Contagious” with Shizzy also, and it was pretty much the same thing.

Your videos are always unique and artistic. How did you come up with these concepts and what did you aim to deliver to everyone?

I have always wanted to create my own aesthetics in my videos, the inspiration comes from everything that I’ve learned along the way. I love art and fashion, but I’m African first, and I try to incorporate that into my music. I describe it as African contemporary because they are not as traditional as those of my peers.

With all the singles, do you plan to release another album or EP soon?

I have an EP coming out, its called Contagious”, a seven-song EP with “Show You Off” and “Contagious” alongside five other unreleased songs. I have another EP as well that I’m working on, its called “Trouble”, it’s a seven-song EP as well, it’s about those girls that create trouble everywhere they go because of their beauty. They all have a lot of collaborations.

Universal music just signed a branch into Africa last month, and you were one of the few to be signed. How does it feel?

I’m honoured, first of all, we have similar goals to showcase African culture and its range to the world because they know very little of the kind of music we have here. We’re just getting started.

What does this mean for your fans and music now that you’re in a major record label?

I have a lot of collaborations and projects coming in so they should not worry about videos and singles (laughs). I’ve been doing exclusive private showcases as part of my African tour, we began in South Africa, we’ll be doing exclusive pop-up shop event in Lagos with a performance, in December I’ll be doing more in-depth performances and showcases around the world.

Fire collabos we should be looking forward to?

On “Contagious” there won’t be any collaborations, but on “Trouble” we’ll be doing collabos with LegenduryBeatz, Producer Julez, Wande Coal, I’m looking forward to working with some Kenyan artists as well like Sauti Sol and Naiboi alongside other international artistes.

So, what’s your favourite thing to do when you’re not writing/producing/recording?

I like to cook. I can make a mean Chicken Rice. Haha.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into? I get into a lot of trouble with women. Haha.

Is Wurld taken? I belong to the world.

What is the motto you live by in your career? Aim to give and inspire, then give and inspire some more.

Finally, how has your experience in Kenya been so far? The people are very kind and helpful, it has been great.

Meeting the partner’s parents and family for the first time is without a doubt one of the most nerve-racking things to do in a developing romantic relationship.

For Kenyan babe Tanasha Donna, it was not any different as her man, Diamond Platnumz, finally took her to meet his mother, Mama Dangote.

According to the Bongo star, the petite Kenyan radio presenter “was scared as F***” when she met her in-laws over the weekend.

The musician posted video clips of the meet up at his palatial home in Tanzania dubbed State House.

In one video, Tanasha can be seen trying to muster enough courage to get past the door. When she finally does, Tanasha is welcomed by Diamond’s elder sister, Esma Platinumz, who hugs her.

In the second clip, Tanasha was once again spotted looking quite nervous as she stalls on the door leading to the kitchen where Mama Dangote was.

“Somebody met my family for the first time leo…she was Scared as F……..😂😂” wrote Diamond Platnumz.

The videos end with the family sharing a meal at the dining table.
