Shaving My 13 Year Dreads Represents my Musical Rebirth, Rapper Chiwawa

Chiwawa whose real name is Ken Gaciengo Mwai is undeniably one of Kenya’s best rappers having risen to prominence in the early 2000s.

Considered a veteran in Kenya’s rap industry, Chiwawa has been in the industry for over a decade. During this time, the rapper who is known for stirring a feud with the Kleptomaniax, has had trademark dreadlocks that are no more.

After 13 years, Chiwawa has dropped the locks to mark his rebirth for the second half of his career.

Great Time for Great New beginnings. #Rebirth @dmikethemonster @zehandprint @roygachuhi #letsgetit

A post shared by King Chiwawa (@chiwawa254) on

The artiste who describes himself as arrogant, bold, fearless and skillful spoke to Nairobi News about his rebranding which will be marked with the release of his upcoming 8-track EP titled ‘Rebirth.’

What have you been up to lately away from music? – I have been in the studio a lot and have been making time to try to mentor the youth. I have an initiative called Young, Gifted and Green, where we teach green solutions to young people.

The dreads are gone, what’s up with that? – I shaved a few months ago. After 13 years with them, I decided it was time to let go. New look, new music. Yes, man. I have been in this game for so long now and I decided it was time to rebrand as I get ready to release my new music. I have them stored somewhere safe and I’ll be auctioning them soon for a worthy cause.

So what does the new look mean? – The new look means there is growth from the way I’m writing my music and the themes that I have chosen. Basically, my whole approach to music has totally changed. There is growth in it but still the Uchiwawa (the core) will still be there. For now, it is a new sound and all you have to do is sit down and wait.

How has family changed you? – Family is good, my first born is seven years old. I think I have matured enough because I know a few things about family life now. Family humbles you, it changes your whole perspective in life. When you stop mattering and somebody else matters more than you, it makes you more selfless.

What did you think of the three female rappers going at each other like they did last year? – I listened to them and it was interesting. For me it was a win-win situation because at the end of the day, some unknown brands came to the limelight. I can’t say who won, but it was a plus for the industry. The game won.

You have been in the industry for a long time, what do you think you can change and what do you think the industry in Kenya needs? – One person cannot change the industry. I’m just playing my part. It takes the effort of all the artistes to change the industry. I cannot say I am doing anything different but I believe I’m playing my part. When we work together, we complement each other by bringing in different styles and that is one way we can grow. We do not have to do the same thing. I’m bringing what I have on the table and hope people will like it. I might not have the secret ingredients but who knows.

At Sh1000 Per Episode, Comedian Blames Churchill for Ayeiya Dying a Poor Man

The issue of just how much Daniel Ndambuki pays his talents to appear on TV don’t seem to be going away.

By now we know that Churchill Show comedians are not the best paid people on TV. It has long been claimed that they get paid a few thousands shillings to entertain guests, and few more if their act is broadcast on TV.

Radio host and comedian Rapcha the Sayantist yesterday launched a tweetstorm blaming Daniel Ndambuki for the state of his comedians. He claimed that the reason Ayeiya died ‘a poor man’ was because he sold his jokes to Churchill.

Rapcha then went on to give his personal experience, saying that he walked out of the show after one season after making the discovery. He further made a bold claim that all Churchill Show comedians will ‘die poor’ unless they leave like Eric Omondi.

Rapcha then stated that the amount of money Ayeiya should have earned for his time at Churchill should have been enough to take his child through college.

Asked by a fan how much comedians on the show get paid, Rapcha revealed that the figure was Sh4000.

He would later clarify that Sh4000 is a monthly figure, which translates to Sh1000 per episode.

When some fans tried to explain that Churchill gives the comedians a national platform and the exposure that comes with it, Rapcha rebuffed that saying “a platform does not pay bills.”

He then castigated Churchill for not footing the bill in Ayeiya’s funeral preparations, and instead setting up a paybill number for contributions.

Daniel Ndambuiki did not reply.

Rapper Brian Ouko Omollo aka Khaligraph Jones, born and raised in Nairobi’s notorious Eastlands area has never been shy to revisit his roots.

With his star currently shining brighter than ever before, the ‘Micasa Sucasa’ rapper appears to be on a mission to remain grounded to his humble beginnings and remind himself of how far he has come since he burst onto the scene in 2009 after he won the Kenyan Edition of the Channel O Emcee Africa competitions at the age of 19.

Over the weekend, he went back to his former high school for what looks like a documentary shoot..details are still scanty on the project.

While at his former school, Brucewood School, Khali sat in the same spot he used to sit about 8 years ago and was soon overwhelmed with emotion.

“The fact that I’m here today means a lot to me. This place reminds me of how it all started. It reminds me of my humble beginnings and I have to say I’m happy..this gold..eish..damn,” says Khali in a short Instagram clip.

With four albums to her name, Coast based songbird Mwanaisha Abdalla aka Nyota Ndogo is one of the most revered and celebrated musicians in the country.

In addition to her astounding musical talents, Nyota’s background and rags to riches story make her a darling and an inspiration to many.

Before she was discovered by Andrew Burchell, a Mombasa-based producer, the ‘Watu na Viatu’ singer was a school dropout who worked as a housemaid.

Back then, life wasn’t as rosy for the taarab-influenced pop singer and on Monday she took a trip down memory lane with her Instagram followers by sharing a pic from her difficult past.

The snap shows where she used to retire after a long day of selling ‘Viazi Karai’ (boiled potatoes coated in a batter made of white flour, gram flour and saffron or turmeric powder then deep-fried).

“Nilianzia hapa.Niliuza viazi karai mahabri kila siku hasubui jioni naenda kuimba na band.MUNGU siwezi kusahau uliponitoa,” Nyota captioned the pic.

Anita Nderu Silences Naysayers Who Allege her Flashy Lifestyle is Funded by a Sponsor

How dare they? Naysayers have increasingly been linking Anita Nderu’s lavish lifestyle to a ‘sponsor’ which has forced the bombshell to respond and set the record straight.

Anita, 27, a self-confessed travel enthusiast has been taking trips to different parts of the world – including South Africa and New York in recent months – sparking rumors that a rich older man(sponsor) might be funding her lifestyle.

The Capital FM presenter who doubles up as a news anchor, TV presenter, Coca-Cola brand advocate, and still co-hosts the Trend on NTV, says she is just a hardworking girl and that assumptions that a man is financing her lifestyle are backward and primitive.

“But why will people not allow me to live my best life? I’ve been DMd some of the rumours people have heard about me and apparently one of them is that I have sponsors in my life. Giiirl do you know how hard I work? I’m always telling young women why it’s important to work and make their money. I did a lot of things last year and many people felt like the things I did…someone paid for me.

It’s 2017, it’s very primitive, it’s very backward to assume that a woman cannot live well off her own money, there has to be a man financing her. So maybe they should explain to me what a woman who isn’t being sponsored lives like so I can understand the very backward benchmark they have put on women who work hard for their money. Before you misconstrue what working hard is I work in television-radio, am a social media influencer and I bake cakes, that kind of work,” She said.

She added that she is not successful as a result of witchcraft.

“For the record, I’m not a witch, there are people who believe in witchcraft and I don’t, I believe in God.”

Comedian Jaymo Ule Msee to Star in New Political Drama Series ‘Ms Politician’

Comedian Wilson Muirania Gathoni, popularly known as Jaymo Ule Msee, is taking his craft to the next level.

The comedian who has risen to prominence for making hilarious online videos is immersing himself in a political drama series, ‘Ms. Politician’, as a producer and actor.

The show is set to premiere on the first day of May. More details to be released soon.

The comedian spoke to Buzz about ‘Ms. Politician’ and below are the excerpts.

You’re not known for this kind of projects, why inject yourself into a political drama?

When I read about this project I became so passionate about it, I sat down with my co-producer and decided this is what we were going to do because it will change the conversation about female leadership in Kenya and highlight the elements people fear especially young women when seeking leadership.

Why should players in the arts industry start talking about serious matters like development issues?

People in the arts wield a lot of influence and whenever they start a conversation people are inclined to follow. If there’s something you are passionate about, start talking about it. The Jaymo Ule Msee team saw an opportunity to change society and took it.

What is your vision for this project?

Being an election year, we want to influence as many people as we can to elect women leaders. There are stereotypes on women and why women shouldn’t lead. We will be successful if we see an increase in women leaders after we are done with this project. In reality we are far from the results that we want but we will get there.

Who is a good leader to you since you portray a bad one in the series?

We have this incumbent leader who is entangled in corruption, squandering of resources and there is no improvement on infrastructure. Sifa Dede, my co-lead, plays a character that has a drive for change; good schools, infrastructure, employment and all the functions of a Governor. In real life, every leader should do what they were elected to do. Period.

You have young followers as Jaymo Ule Msee, what’s your message to them?

A lot of times we sit down and wait for change to be brought to us instead of being at the forefront. Young people should rise up, if you see something that needs to be fixed it’s up to us to fix it. If you think that you are the change people want then go implement it. Make the right decisions.
